Household Hazardous Waste
Hardin County Solid Waste & Recycling has a Hazardous Waste Satellite Site at our Facility. This program is provided through a partnership between Hardin County Solid Waste Disposal Commission and Metro Waste Authority.
This program is free to Residents of Hardin County, Iowa. Farmers and Businesses need to contact Metro Waste Authority (515-967-5512) for proper disposal.
HOURS OF OPERATION: (April 1st – October 31st)
8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (Monday – Friday)
Accepted Items:
- Aerosol cleaners and paints
- Acids / Bases
- Antifreeze
- Batteries (rechargeable)
- Cell Phones
- Cleaners
- Fertilizers
- Fluorescent Light Bulbs (including CFL’s)
- Floor care Products
- Glues (except Elmer’s school glues & stick glues)
- Gasoline
- Kerosene
- Motor Oil (used)
- Oil Filters (used)
- Oil Based Paint
- Oven Cleaner
- Petroleum-Based Adhesives
- Pesticides
- Poison
- Pool Chemicals
- Roofing Tar
- Rust Removers
- Sharps – must be contained in detergent bottles or sharps containers (No milk jugs or pop bottles) Lids must also be taped shut.
- Shellac
- Stains
- Thermostats / Thermometers (mercury)
- Varnishes
- Vegetable Oil
- Weed Killers
- Windshield Fluid
Non Accepted Items:
- Ammunition & Explosives
- Asbestos (contact Landfill at 641-858-5904 for disposal)
- Dry Cement Mix (can be Landfilled)
- Joint Compound (can be Landfilled)
- Medications (there is a dropbox at the Hardin Co. Sheriff’s Office in Eldora, IA)
- Radioactive Materials (please contact Clean Harbors Company at 515-262-2638)
- Incandescent light bulbs (please put these in your garbage)
- propane tanks
- empty containers (please put these in your garbage)
- non-hazardous waste (please put this in your garbage)
- Latex paint (This is non hazardous. Needs to be dried up and put in the Landfill)
